What You Must Know When Setting Up A New Shed

If you are going to build a new shed on your property, you may have a lot of different uses for it. Maybe you are looking for a place to store your grill or your garden tools all year around, when you are not using them. Maybe you need more storage space so that you can get some of your stuff out of your basement. No matter why you want to build it, there are some important things to think about first.

Where is Your Property Line?

It is incredibly important to know where your property line is, first and foremost, so that you do not accidentally build the garden shed on someone else’s property. Even if you are sure it is on your property, though, you need to know where the line is so that you do not get too close. In most areas, you have to leave a set amount of distance – two feet, for example – between any structure that you put up and the edge of the property.

What Are The Building Codes?

You may also want to look at the building codes to make sure that you do everything according to the local laws and regulations. Does the shed have to have a foundation, or is it up to you? How big does the doorway have to be? If you do not know these things off the top of your head, glance over the codes before you start to keep from accidentally violating anything.

Do You Need a Permit?

Another thing to consider is whether or not you need a permit. Just like the codes, this law can be different everywhere. You might need a permit if you are going to build it all by hand, for instance, but you might be able to put up preassembled kit sheds without one. The need for a permit might stem from the size of the shed or whether you are building a new structure or just fixing up an old one. If you start work without a permit, you could face fines, so make sure that the paperwork is in order first.
